The First 50 Years

George and Marsha Braziller began The Book Find Club in 1941 and The Seven Arts Book Society in 1951. Using the structure of these two early book clubs, the Brazillers formed the company and began to publish their own books in 1955. The firm is famous for its art books on painters such as Pablo Picasso, Will Barnett, Henri Matisse, Red Grooms, Philip Guston, and George Inness. In addition to timely and beautiful visual books, George Braziller, Inc.'s reputation has been built on publishing serious literary works and works of art history, architecture, and criticism. Over the years the firm has published Nathalie Sarraute, Claude Simon, Jean-Paul Sartre, Charles Simic, Frank Bidart, Janet Frame, Buchi Emecheta, and the pioneering art historian, Meyer Shapiro.

Today

In 2011, at the age of 95, George Braziller retired, and Michael Braziller, his son and the publisher of Persea Books, became Publisher and Editorial Director. Joel Braziller, George's elder son became Secretary-Treasurer and Director of Permissions. Together with a small, dedicated team, George Braziller, Inc. continues to publish work of quality and importance. We are proud to uphold the Braziller tradition with our current series of contemporary Australian poetry, a hilarious and moving collection by essayist Allison Gruber, and the first English translations of the fiction of renowned Mexican writer, Juan Villoro. Along with our commitment to discovering new American and international talent, we are proud to honor our wonderful backlist, reissuing the works of Buchi Emecheta, Henri Matisse, George Inness, Charles Simic, Langston Hughes, and many more.
