Meyer Schapiro (1904-1996) was University Professor Emeritus at Columbia University, where he was a student and teacher for over fifty years. Among the many honors accorded him were the Charles Eliot Norton Professorship at Harvard University (1966) and the Slade Professorship for Art History at Oxford University (1968). His previous publications of Selected Papers, all published by Braziller, include Romanesque Art (vol. I), Late Antique, Early Christian, and Medieval Art (vol. III), Theory and Philosophy of Art: Style, Artist, and Society (vol. IV), and Modern Art (vol. II), which was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award (1978) and the Mitchell Prize for Art History (1979). Schapiro's Impressionism: Reflections and Perceptions was published by Braziller in 1996.
